Rooibos is one of the lesser-known tea blends in Tea with Tae’s tea cabinet, but it should become a staple herbal tea in yours! And here’s why 👇
Rooibos (pronounced “roy-boss”) is a type of herb native to South Africa. It is made from the leaves of the Aspalathus linearis plant and has a distinctive red color and boasts a slightly sweet, nutty flavor. Unlike traditional “tea” that is made from the camellia sinensis plant and contains caffeine, rooibos is naturally caffeine-free and has many scientifically-backed health properties.
Rooibos is rich in antioxidants
Antioxidants are compounds that help protect the body against damage from unstable molecules that cause oxidative stress and damage to cells, proteins, and DNA. Over time, this damage contributes to the development of chronic diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. Some of the most common antioxidants include vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene. Rooibos is packed with the antioxidants of aspalathin and quercetin. Aspalathin has been shown in studies to help balance blood sugar, improve insulin resistance, and boost metabolism.
Rooibos may improve heart health
The consumption of rooibos is correlated with better heart health, studies show. For instance, rooibos has been shown to inhibit certain enzymes in the body that increase blood pressure and shown to decrease “bad” LDL cholesterol if rooibos is consumed daily for a period of six weeks.
Rooibos may clear up your skin
The anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties in rooibos have been shown to reduce the appearance of acne and other skin conditions.
Rooibos can give your brain a boost
The rich antioxidants in rooibos work to reduce stress and promote calmness. In one study, rooibos was shown to reverse the increase in stress-related metabolites during times of increased anxiety. So when you’re feeling stressed, grab a cup of rooibos!
Rooibos can help you get a good night’s rest
Because rooibos is naturally caffeine-free, you can drink all day and night without affecting your sleep.
Tea with Tae offers four different rooibos teas: Rooibos, Rooibos Chai, Caramel Rooibos, and Honella. Try a cup today, and see how you feel!
